The Power of Leadership in Plain View at Latina Conference 500 Registrants Attended 7th Latinas & Power Symposium

Hartford, CT - July, 2010 -- Breaking attendance records for three years in a row, the 500 women taking part in the 7th Annual Latinas & Power Symposium filled all banquet, breakout and exhibition space at the Hartford Hilton Hotel at 315 Trumbull Avenue in Hartford this past Thursday, May 13th at the all day event.

"They come for the top notch speakers, the information packed workshops, in search of career and business opportunities and to expand their network of connections.  I make sure they leave with the tools they need to succeed”  stated Ms. Marilyn Alverio, founder and principal of Ethnic Marketing Solutions, the event producer.

The highly-touted event is Corporate America's preferred type of venue, especially as companies seek to capitalize on the burgeoning US Latino market.  The Latinas & Power Symposium allows companies to showcase their products and services, get face to face with the women who will lead their companies now and in the immediate future, and strengthen their image within the Latino communities they wish to reach.  Ms. Marie van Luling, Vice-President of Communications for Northeast Utilities (NU), welcomed participants at the breakfast plenary, reaffirming in her comments the company’s unflagging commitment to the event and to Latinos in the northeast New England region.  NU also received the corporate award in recognition of their five years of support to the Latinas & Power Symposium. Travelers and Comcast Business Class were welcomed as two new lead sponsors.  This year, Travelers in partnership with Ethnic Marketing Solutions, created the Latinas & Power Youth Institute which brought in 80 local high school girls to the event to participate in a number of structured and well designed leadership building activities for the high school girls.

Ms. Yasmin Davidds, author and motivational speaker had the luncheon audience alternating from tears to laughter as she wove into her dynamic speech pieces from her own life traumas and her eventual rise to wealth and fame.

The darling of the day was Ms. Esmeralda Santiago, author, filmmaker, and speaker whose latest book, Conquistadora, will soon come out as a movie.  Ms. Santiago, the oldest of 11 children, overcame abject poverty and uses much of her own life experience as material for her work.  She has received countless awards in literature and her books are now distributed in many countries and in several languages.  At the awards reception that concluded the jam-packed event, Ms. Santiago was conferred a citation by the City Council of Hartford and was presented with the “Honoring Latina Legends Award” by Ethnic Marketing Solutions for her lifetime achievements.

For her contributions in theatre, film and entertainment and for serving as a laudable example for many, three-time Academy Award recipient, Ms. Rita Moreno, also received the “Honoring Latina Legends Award.”  Ms. Moreno, who has been very supportive of the Latinas & Power event since its inception, was unable to attend but sent a videoed message accepting the award and congratulating the Latinas & Power Symposium.

The Symposium closed with the same level of energy with which it began, with participants taking to the dance floor for Salsa dancing and an added opportunity to strike up relationships with fellow attendees.

The Latinas & Power Symposium attracts women from across New England and has consistently registered between 400 – 500 Latinas. Its sponsorships have grown over the past six years to more than 20 Fortune 500 corporations, 40 local businesses, 15 colleges and 25 high schools. This year’s presenting sponsors who recognize the growing power of Latinas in the corporate world and are eager to benefit from the unique bilingual and bicultural dynamic these leaders often bring, were: Travelers, Northeast Utilities System, Comcast Business Class, NBC 30, American Airlines, Telemundo, Univision, Aetna, Mass Mutual, Eastern Connecticut State University, CHET, MDC, Hartford Hospital, The Bushnell, El Show de Analeh, M That Look, MOLI, Identidad Latina, Central Park West, CT Association for United Spanish Action, Inc., State Farm, SBDC, La Voz Hispana, Connecticut Health Foundation, National Hispana Leadership Instititure, SAMA, Vida en Connecticut, Viva Hartford, CREC, CRT and Universal Health Care Foundation of Connecticut.
