TRAVELERS SPONSORS AREA HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS
Effort Encourages Higher Education and Career Mindedness
Hartford, CT -- March 30, 2010 –– The Travelers Companies, Inc., in partnership with Ethnic Marketing Solutions, Inc., has recruited 80 Hartford area high school girls to attend the one-day, Latinas & Power Symposium (LPSÒ) , to be held at the Hilton Hartford Hotel, 315 Trumbull Street, Hartford, Connecticut on Thursday, May 13, from 8:00 AM to 7:30 PM. The event attracts approximately 500 women from a cross-section of industries and has traditionally included specially earmarked activities for high school girls.
Travelers is sponsoring the symposium portion geared toward the students. Using the Strength Finders 2.0® assessment tool, each young woman will be able to assess her leadership skills and draw a map of their career goals based on the findings.
“Travelers is proud to support the Latinas & Power Symposium,” stated Ms. Joelle Hayes, Travelers Second Vice President of Diversity. “Recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce is a key business imperative for Travelers in order to attract talented, creative individuals who will help identify new opportunities and help Travelers serve a diverse base of customers and agents.”
Travelers has been recognized as one of the top companies supporting minorities and women and as a good place in which to work. Awards in various categories have been conferred to Travelers by: Connecticut Chapter of the National Society of Hispanic MBAs, and Savoy Magazine and Business Week magazine, among others.
Ms. Marilyn Alverio, principal owner of Ethnic Marketing Solutions and producer of the event, added: “Travelers is committed to the communities in which they do business. The have done an exceptional job at designing the youth segment of the Symposium. They have included these girls’ responses to the strengths finder assessment as the centerpiece for developing the leadership skills component. It is my dream to see the barriers that hinder Latina women diminished – if not altogether eliminated – through interventions such as these and through the leadership of companies like Travelers. The Latinas & Power Symposium additionally offers these young women the opportunity to hear the stories of Latinas who have overcome great obstacles and succeeded in spite or because of them.”
Ms. Alexia Cruz will welcome guests on behalf of the Travelers at the general session luncheon program that will feature internationally recognized motivational speaker, Ms. Yasmin Davidds. Ms. Cruz, a graduate of Harvard University and Manchester High School, works as in-house counsel at the Travelers and is a past president of the Connecticut Hispanic Bar Association. In April 2007, New England In-House and its sister publication, Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly presented Ms. Cruz with a "Leaders in the Law" award for her career success.
The symposium is a day-long, fast-paced and highly informative forum targeted to the Latina on a career or business track. It presents an impressive roster of local and nationally known Latinas who share their stories and experiences. The objective is to provide hands-on techniques and strategies for success through specialized workshops for women at different stages of their careers, business and personal lives. The event will close with an elegant reception honoring Latina Legends. Best selling author and award winning screen writer, Esmeralda Santiago, will be one of the honorees present that evening. Actress Rita Moreno will accept an award via video satellite.
The cost of the full conference is $100 before April 15 and $125.00 after April 16. This amount includes parking vouchers, conference bags, gifts and grand prize drawing. For information on individual events, please check online at: www.emsbusiness.com
